Panama is a presidential representative democratic republic with a land area of 74,177.3 km2 (28,640.0 sq mi) and a population of 4 million inhabitants. Currently, vehicular congestion is a serious problem and the habit of moving on foot is almost non-existent. There is a high dependence on private vehicles due to the characteristics of urban development. Non-motorized mobility presents challenges; pedestrian infrastructure is in poor condition or non-existent. The infrastructure and urban planning design are not adequate since they do not consider the space and facilities required by pedestrians and cyclists.
