Technical assistance is available from International Organizations, Global Partnerships and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that provide information on-line and/or provide expert assistance often in association with funding agencies.

UN-Habitat | Nairobi, Kenya

UN-Habitat is the United Nations program working towards a better urban future. Its mission is to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. UN-Habitat works in over 90 countries to promote transformative change in cities and human settlements through knowledge, policy advice, technical assistance and collaborative action. UN-Habitat offers a comprehensive package of knowledge, advocacy, and technical assistance to support national governments and local authorities in the development and implementation of sustainable urban mobility plans and investment strategies. In consultation with partner governments, UN-Habitat will initiate and support a broad consultation process of stakeholders to develop metropolitan mobility strategies that are adapted to local needs and particularities, and feasible in terms of initial financing, construction, maintenance, and operations.

C40 Cities | London, UK

C40 is a network of the world’s megacities committed to addressing climate change. C40 supports cities to collaborate effectively, share knowledge and drive meaningful, measurable and sustainable action on climate change. The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, now in its 12th year, connects more than 95 of the world’s greatest cities, representing over 700 million people and one quarter of the global economy. Created and led by cities, C40 is focused on tackling climate change and driving urban action that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and climate risks, while increasing the health, wellbeing and economic opportunities of urban citizens.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability | Bonn, Germany

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability (or simply ICLEI) is an international non-governmental organization that promotes sustainable development. Formerly known as the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, ICLEI provides technical consulting to local governments to meet sustainability objectives. It is a global network of more than 2,500 local and regional governments committed to sustainable urban development. Active in 125+ countries, it influences sustainability policy and drives local action for low emission, nature-based, equitable, resilient and circular development. Its members and experts work together through peer exchange, partnerships and capacity building to create systemic change for urban sustainability.

MobiliseYourCity (MYC) | Brussels, Belgium

Launched at COP21 in Paris, the MobiliseYourCity Partnership is a leading global Partnership for sustainable mobility of nearly 100 partners, including 63 member cities and 15 member countries. It is jointly co-financed by the European Commission's Directorate-General for International Partnerships (INTPA), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMU), the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM), and the French Ministry of Ecological Transition (MTE). The Partnership is implemented by AFD, GIZ, ADEME, Cerema, CODATU, EBRD, KFW, and Wuppertal Institute. The MobiliseYourCity Partnership aims to empower 100 cities and 20 countries to improve urban mobility for their citizens and decarbonise transport to fight the global climate crisis.

Sustainable, Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) | Brussels, Belgium

The Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT) multi-stakeholder partnership comprises over 90 organizations (representing UN organizations, Multilateral and Bilateral development organizations, NGOs and Foundations, Academe and the Business Sector). The thematic scope of the Partnership is land transport in developing countries, including freight and passenger transport. Both motorized and non-motorized transport are included. The policies proposed by SLoCaT are universal but the geographical scope of the Partnership is mainly for developing countries. The Partnership’s current focus is Asia, Latin America and Africa.

Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) | Bonn, Germany

TUMI is the leading global implementation initiative on sustainable mobility formed through the union of 11 prestigious partners. The goal is changing mobility for the benefit of people and the environment, with a view to the future. TUMI supports transport projects all around the world and enables policy makers to transform urban mobility. TUMI has three pillars: innovation, knowledge, investment. It supports innovative pilot projects around the world and shares knowledge with planners about modern mobility concepts, in workshops and conferences. It invests in the construction and modernisation of sustainable urban infrastructure.

CIVITAS | Brussels, Belgium

CIVITAS is a programme that is helping the European Commission achieve its ambitious mobility and transport goals. It does this by acting as a network of cities, for cities, dedicated to sustainable urban mobility. Through peer exchange, networking and training, CIVITAS fosters political commitment and boosts collective expertise, equipping cities to put mobility at the centre of decarbonisation. Since its launch in 2002, CIVITAS has advanced research and innovation in sustainable urban mobility and enabled local authorities to develop, test and roll out measures via a range of projects. CIVITAS is ensuring that mobility is a driving force behind the creation of climate-neutral and resilient cities.

EIT Urban Mobility | Budapest, Hungary

EIT Urban Mobility, supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), acts to accelerate positive change on mobility to make urban spaces more liveable. Since January 2019 EIT Urban Mobility has been working to encourage positive changes in the way people move around cities in order to make them more liveable places. EIT Urban Mobility aims to become the largest European initiative transforming urban mobility. Co-funding of up to € 400 million (2020-2026) from the EIT, a body of the European Union, will help make this happen.

European Local Transport Information Service (ELTIS) | Brussels, Belgium

The European Local Transport Information Service (ELTIS) is a non-profit European portal that enables information exchange in the field of urban transport and mobility. It is an initiative of the European Commission, and it is designed to improve mobility, transport efficiency and safety and reduce the environmental impacts of transport. The website contains news on urban transport and mobility; policies and initiatives of the European Commission; open project calls and tenders; tools for practitioners; case studies on urban transport; teaching and educational materials; and a platform for communication.

Institute for Transportation & Development Policy (ITDP) | New York NY, USA

ITDP is a global organization at the forefront of innovation, using technical expertise, direct advocacy, and policy guidance to mitigate the impacts of climate change, improve air quality, and support prosperous, sustainable, and equitable cities. ITDP works in all types of cities on five continents, with offices in China, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico and the United States. ITDP teams include architects, urban planners, leading transport experts, cycling activists, developers, data scientists, and policy specialists working directly with local governments to make visible, on-the-ground improvements.

POLIS | Brussels, Belgium

POLIS is the leading network of European cities and regions working together to develop innovative technologies and policies for local transport. Since 1989, European local and regional authorities have been working together within POLIS to promote sustainable mobility through the deployment of innovative transport solutions. POLIS fosters cooperation and partnerships across Europe with the aim of making research and innovation in transport accessible to cities and regions. It actively supports the participation of its members in European projects, and it has created a framework which facilitates dialogue and exchange between local authorities, the transport research community and industry. It has recently created the POLIS Global Platform with the aim to structure, pool, and support the increasing outreach and exchange activities of the network and its members on an international scale.

World Resource Institute (WRI) | Washington DC, USA

WRI helps cities design and operate cleaner, safer, more efficient and more accessible mobility systems. It promotes high-quality, integrated public transportation systems that include bus rapid transit (BRT), urban buses, informal transport, micromobility, autonomous vehicles and more. It encourages shifts to more active mobility options, like bicycling and walking, and public spaces that safely accommodate these modes. And it helps cities navigate the transition to cleaner-burning fuels and electric vehicles.
