Hungary is a democratic parliamentary republic covering 93,030 square kilometres (35,920 sq mi) with a population of 9.7 million. In 2015 having a SUMP became a precondition for cities to access EU Cohesion Fund financing for specific urban mobility projects (notably intermodal nodes). SUMP preparation became eligible for ERDF funding, as part of the dedicated envelope for urban development of each major city.
There are 11 cities with Urban Mobility Plans online with a total population of 2.7 million people. The cities range in size from 19,833 people (Paks) to 1.8 million people (Budapest). All plans are in Hungarian and one (Budapest) is available in English. Nearly all of the plans have been prepared with consultant assistance in accordance with EU Guidelines and with the support of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
